iPhone Photography Apps

Despite having built up an arsenal of multi-mega pixel DSLR equipment over the years, I still find the best camera is the one I have with me. And that’s often my iPhone. (See Chase Jarvis’ book on this).

But I’m also a technocrat; so I can’t help but want to experiment with the Apps available on the iPhone. Here are some of my favorites:

Camera:

  • Kitcam: Incredible functionality (almost overwhelming). But I’ve tried the others like Pro Camera, Camera+, Genius Camera etc. and this is my “go-to” app.
  • Photosynth: For capturing a scene
  • Groupshot: For the family photo challenged!

Post-capture Utilities:

  • iPhoto: Because it’s so well integrated and I also love the web albums you can create
  • Filters, effects and editing: My top choice is Snapseed; great on the iPad and Mac too.
    • There are many others, of course, like Instagram, EyeEm, PicsArt Photo Studio and PhotoToaster

Share and Store:

  • Cards: Simply amazing way to share digital to physical
    • Postino – another good alternative
  • I love iCloud and photo stream now that it’s finally matured for easy sharing.
  • If you want something Apple independent then 500px feels like a cut above Flickr and Picasa. Though Google’s integration of Picasa is good with their other services.
  • Beamr: For sharing full resolution photos with anyone – no registration or apps required by the recipient

Video:

  • Animoto: Great bridge between photos and video
  • Vine: Simple short sharing
  • Givit Video Highlighter

Other

  • In conjunction with your DSLR:
    • ioShutterPro: For time series photography etc
    • GeoTagr: Great way to log location if your DSLR isn’t enabled

Hardware:

  • Belkin LiveAction Camera Grip: iPhone4/S only – helps if you have fat fingers like me!
  • Check out www.iprolens.com if you’re serious about making this your only camera

Business Apps

  • CaptureBoard: Free, simple whiteboard with perspective correction and GoogleDrive/Dropbox/Evernote upload
  • CamScanner+: Very complete document management
  • Quick Scan: QR and barcodes
